Film Translator

A filmmaker is the translator
of his own vision

Course in Semiolinguistics

The translator of film must deliver a written translation, but what is the object of this translation?

Orally produced utterances, played physically by actors and which take on their full meaning in film.

What does the prosody contribute? What does the body express in human and animal communication? What filmic elements – e.g. the music, the objects we see on screen – must be considered as contextual?

This course adopts a practical approach. It endeavors to determine all specific means required in audiovisual translation. But it also adopts a theoretical approach in that it deals with language, codes, the meaningful organization of image and sound, which are essential considerations in understanding how the non-verbal meaning interacts with the verbal meaning, and what non-verbal processing into words is necessary before starting the word processing that is translation.
