Typographic economy must be applied to ensure readability. Concision is key. We will study certain lexical, syntactical and expressive forms that produce such concision. We will also study how to render implicit in the text everything the sound and image convey on a semiotic level.
Using authentic, practical material, we will create subtitles for films and programs, under real, professionnal, working conditions. Further to an introduction to bilingual subtitling, subtitling for the hearing-impared and audiodescription for the blind, this course aims to develop the art of concise writing, which is widely applicable in multimedia, press and Internet communication.
